India's government has approved duty-free raw sugar imports into the country to meet a domestic
shortage, a government official said Tuesday.
The government eased restrictions by allowing the importer to meet an obligation to export an equivalent amount of
refined white sugar within 24 months by purchasing sugar from another manufacturer, said the official, who didn't want
to be identified.
Previously, raw sugar imports were allowed only on the condition that an equivalent amount of white sugar processed
from the imported raw stock was exported within 24 months.
